Here at LJ Electrical, we specialise in providing electrical maintenance services for commercial, residential and industrial buildings. Regular electrical maintenance is vital for safety reasons, in order to prevent any accidents, but it can also help to improve your building’s energy efficiency, and in turn help to save you money on bills. Today we’re going to focus on some of the signs that your workplace requires some electrical maintenance.
You Experience Regular Circuit Breaker Trips
A circuit breaker break occurs where there is too much electricity flowing through it, or when it cannot handle the current load. This is a safety mechanism that ensures the power is turned off automatically when triggered, to preserve your health and safety. This is a normal occurrence and isn’t usually something to worry about, but if it’s something that’s happening regularly, then it’s important to address the issue to see if there is an underlying cause.
Your Lights are Flickering
Flickering lights can be really frustrating in any environment, let alone when you are trying to work. They can also be associated with headaches, vision problems, reduced morale and lower energy levels. It can also increase your power bills. Whilst it could be a case of needing to replace a bulb, if that doesn’t solve the problem, then it could be down to a more serious issue such as an overloaded circuit, or outdated wiring. A key sign that it could be a bigger problem is if it includes more than one room or circuit.
Electrical Safety at Work
Electrical Outlets Feel Warm
Electrical outlets that are warm to touch after you unplug your device, or even when empty, are a sign that your electric system needs some maintenance. Although the outlets create some heat during use, to check that this is an acceptable level of heat, you should unplug the appliance, and check the outlet in an hour, when it should be at room temperature. If the outlet is still warm, it could be a sign that you need a professional electrician.
There are Sparks When Using Plugs
A brief spark when plugging or unplugging appliances is a normal occurrence, as it may happen when there is a rapid draw on the available power. However, it this is happening a lot, there could be more serious underlying issues. Sparks could be a sign of a dangerous problem, such as a build-up of excessive heat in the outlets. If this is the case, it could lead to other issues such as melting wire insulation, which could start an electrical fire. On the other hand, there could be some water exposure, which could short out the circuit.
The Building is Old
The aforementioned issue could also be a result of having an older outlet, that is worn-out, with loosened connections. An older building could need more regular maintenance when it comes to electrics, as the wiring is at a higher risk of being worn out. Whether wiring requires replacement, or you would like a special safety switch installed, we can carry out the right tests and repair work to ensure your building’s electrics are fit for purpose.
